"People Who Help Us": 6 Early Years Topic Ideas, With Stories

Six easy ideas for the "People who help us" topic in nursery and early years, with stories that make every child the hero.

"People who help us" is one of the best-loved topics in nursery and Foundation Stage. Children already know the firefighter, the police officer and the doctor from books and the street. The trick is to make the topic feel like theirs. Here are six ideas that work in UAE classrooms, with little preparation.

1. Start with a question, not a poster

Ask the class: "Who helped you this week?" Answers will surprise you: the bus driver, the school nurse, grandma. Write each one on a card and stick it on the wall. The topic now starts from the children's own lives.

2. Set up a role play corner

Turn a corner into a fire station, a police desk or a clinic for one week each. A few hats, a toy phone and a clipboard are enough. Children learn the words of each job by using them: "emergency", "safe", "help".

3. Invite a real helper

Many fire stations, police stations and clinics are happy to send someone for 20 minutes. Prepare a few questions with the children in advance, so the visit is a conversation, not a lecture.

4. Read stories where the child is the helper

Children listen differently when the hero has their name. In a personalized story from Liloxi, the child is the little firefighter who rescues a cat, or the police officer who keeps the neighbourhood safe. They read it again and again, and explain the job in their own words.

  1. The Little Firefighter (ages 2 to 7)
  2. The Little Police Officer (ages 4 to 7)
  3. The Pilot Around the World (ages 2 to 5)
  4. Wants to Be… (ages 2 to 9)

Every story comes in English and Arabic, and parents see a free preview before ordering.

5. Career Day: "Come as the job in your book"

End the topic with a dress-up day. Each child comes dressed as their helper and shows the class one page they love. Shy children often speak more easily when they are holding a book about themselves.

6. Say thank you

Make a big thank-you card for a real helper at school, like the guard, the cleaner or the bus driver, and deliver it together. It closes the topic with the most important lesson: helping others is something we can all do.

A Story for Every Child in Your Class

You don't need to collect any children's photos to give every child their own book.

  1. The school buys: bulk prices from 10 books, 10% to 25% off. Each family gets a link, adds their own child's name and photo at home, and the book is delivered to their door.
  2. Parents buy: share your school's code. Parents get 15% off, and your class earns one free book for every 10 orders.

Prefer a gift to hand out? The Gift Box comes with a redeem card, and each family creates their child's story later.
